Olorun Moses Taiga was elected under a very tight security atmosphere with the backing of the President Generals, Ewheya(Women Groups) and Youths of the Various Urhobo Communities while Chief Joe Omene was absent at the Special Emergency Urhobo Progress Union,UPU Congress/ Election convened by the Board of Trustee of Urhobo Progress Union held at Uwiamuge-Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The motion was supported by Chief(Mrs.) Evelyn Ohwojeheri, Chairperson of Egweya’R Urhobo and Mr. Agativie Aziza seconded the motion.
In an address, Secretary of the Board of Trustees,BoT of Urhobo Progress Union, High Chief Victor Otomiewo warned Urhobo sons and daughters to sustain the ostracism placed on Chief Joe Omene and Co by the Urhobo traditional rulers.
The former Delta State Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice described Chief Omene as “abominable in its totality” pointing out that he made Urhobo Progress Union and the Urhobo Nation as a “laughing stock” in the comity of tribes or Nations with his acts of rascality, illegality
Otomiewo accused Chief Joe Omene of alleged corruption as well as abuse of provisions of the constitution of the Urhobo Progress Union with his “flagrant and/or violent violation and/or desecration of the constitution” since his assumption of office stressing that, “he also
dragged the Chairman of Urhobo Traditional Rulers to court”.
In his words, “Omene also failed, refused and/or neglected to carry out essential functions of his office as demanded by the Constitution but instead has turned the Union into a partisan, social and/or a beggarly Union.”
Otomiewo also stated that the emergency congress was convened because of the crisis that has engulfed UPU since the demise of the late President General, Chief(Gen.) Patrick Aziza four years ago.
According to him,” It is crystal clear to all that the Urhobo Progress Union is in great crisis, unrest and chaos that have been foisted upon the Union as a result of the in-fighting, allegations and counter-allegations of fraud, abuse of office, gross misconduct as well as flagrant and/or total disregard of the express provisions of the constitution of Urhobo Progress Union and other laid down laws perpetuated by members of the immediate past National Executive led by Chief Joe Orode Omene whose tenure expired and/or elapsed on the 2nd of December,2016.”
Otomiewo pointed out that,”No Valid Congress has been held since Chief Joe Omene and his administration and their tenor of office which they inherited from the late Major Gen. Patrick Aziza led Executive terminated on the 2nd of December,2016.”
He appealed to Urhobo Nation to put behind partisan politics to reclaim the lost glory of Urhobo Nation in Delta State and Nigeria in general.
